OpenAI’s viral video app Sora is getting a major upgrade. Following its rapid climb to the top of the App Store charts, the company is now teasing a set of new features that push creative expression even further. The Sora update will introduce AI-generated videos of pets, built-in video editing tools, improved social experiences, and an eagerly awaited Android version that’s said to be arriving “soon.”

The announcement came directly from Bill Peebles, the head of Sora, who revealed on X that users will soon be able to turn their pets, or even favorite objects like stuffed toys—into animated “cameos.” This new feature expands on Sora’s original capability, which allowed users to record themselves and create lifelike AI personas. Now, your cat, dog, or even your favorite coffee mug can star in custom AI videos alongside you or your friends.

Peebles said the update will also make it easier to explore trending cameos. The app’s creation interface will now highlight the most popular user-generated characters in real time, encouraging more social engagement and discovery inside Sora’s growing creative ecosystem.

But that’s not all. The Sora update introduces basic video editing tools for the first time. Users will be able to stitch together multiple clips directly within the app, paving the way for more polished storytelling. OpenAI says more advanced editing features will roll out gradually, giving creators finer control over their AI-powered videos.

Another part of the update focuses on building community. Sora is experimenting with new social features that make collaboration more natural, think shared creative spaces for universities, sports clubs, or even companies. These community-driven channels are designed to make AI video creation a more interactive and social experience.

OpenAI is also responding to user feedback about overzealous moderation. Many users have complained that Sora’s content filters are too strict. The company says it’s working to strike a better balance by refining its moderation system and improving overall app performance to make video generation faster and smoother.

While iPhone users continue to enjoy early access, Android users won’t have to wait much longer. The Sora Android version is already listed on Google Play for pre-registration, with OpenAI confirming that it will launch “soon.” However, no specific release date has been announced yet.

Despite being available only in the U.S. and Canada, Sora’s momentum has been staggering. According to data from Appfigures, the app has already surpassed 2 million downloads since its late September debut, an impressive feat considering it remains invite-only.

As OpenAI continues to expand Sora’s creative toolkit, the app is evolving into more than just a viral experiment. It’s shaping up to be a social creative hub, one that blends AI, storytelling, and imagination into a single, shareable experience.
